Bringing lessons to life with virtual reality at New Market
New Market Elementary School
Posted On: Wednesday, March 07, 2018

This time of the year, students and teachers really begin preparing for the End of Grade tests by practicing reading passages and comprehension questions...a task that not many students find engaging. However, Ms. Allred, 3rd Grade Teacher, in collaboration with Mrs. Altman, our Technology Assistant is bringing the test prep to life through Virtual Reality!

Ms. Allred's class read a test prep passage on the Waitomo Glowworm Caves of New Zealand. After going over the passage and the comprehension questions Ms. Allred and Mrs. Altman took it one step further. Ms. Allred pulled up a map using Google Maps to show her students where New Zealand was in reference to our school. From there, Mrs. Altman found a 360 National Geographic video that transports students to the caves of New Zealand where they could see the glowworms first hand! The students were amazed at the bright green and blue glow of the worms as they moved their body to view more of the caves. They loved using the video, along with virtual reality viewers, to expand their learning and get a real world understanding of what they read in the passage!
